“You aren’t mad at me?” Selena asked meekly as she flew back into the core room.

<Absolutely not. Why would I?> Kers scoffed.

“Because I lied to you?”

<No. At most, you failed to mention something. But it isn’t like it would change anything. You had a life before you were bonded to me. What it was, while interesting, was none of my business if you didn’t want to talk about it.> Kers said, reassuring her.

<But, if you don’t mind, I would love to hear about Earth. Stories of foreign lands, especially now that I am stuck in the sky and can’t even see an inch beyond my walls, are something I would enjoy.>

“Like what?”

<Well, maybe how you came to be a fairy? I assume the people of Earth aren’t fairies.>

Selena laughed. “Well, no. No fairies. No elves, orcs, or mobs either. But it isn’t a happy story. I can’t say that Truck-kun was kind to me,” she said as she crossed and rubbed her arms in front of herself.

<I’m all ears if you want to talk about it with someone. Might help.>

Selena paused for a second to take a breath before responding. “I was on vacation in Tokyo, the largest city in the world. I had planned on seeing the sights, eating the food, and drinking the nights away with a few friends, not hanging out with family.”

Selena took a shuddering breath and squeezed her arms a bit. “But my dad wanted Disneyworld, kid stuff. He knew I was there with my friends but thought I could spend some time with them. I didn’t want to see them. He called me at the hotel I was at…and…and…” she said as tears started to well up a bit before she blinked them away.

Kers mentally called for Vex, who had been exploring the unused rooms on this iteration of the Bronze level.

Vex got there quickly and, without prompting, jumped into Selena’s arms and nuzzled her, vibrating gently. She latched on to him reflexively and gripped him tight enough her knuckles went white.

“I said mean, awful things. Tho-those were my last words. I stormed out of the hotel to meet my friends at the bar across the street when Truck-kun hit me. I didn’t see it coming, just a loud honk, blinding lights,” she said softly, wincing at the memory. “And then I woke in Hy-Bresail as an eighteen-inch-tall fairy.”

<I am so sorry, Selena. I have nothing to offer but my condolences.> Kers said, empathizing with her.

She flashed a fake smile. “Don’t worry about it. I’ve had twenty years to process the grief.”

<Were you able to talk to anyone about it before?>

She barked a laugh. “And reveal
